You're Invited!

First Volunteer Meeting of the Season

Hi everyone! My name is Jasmine. I just signed on as co-organizer at the beginning of this month. I feel very lucky to be part of Oxfam Action Corps and am excited about all the activities we have planned for this year.

With that said, let me invite you to our first volunteer meet-and-greet of the season. It's today, August 26th, at 5pm at the Flying Star Cafe at the downtown location: 723 Silver Ave. SW. 87102.

We're expecting a good turn out of both new members and returners. Also, we have a special guest visiting--Brian Rawson from Boston headquarters of Oxfam America! I hope you can join us for coffee and conversation about Oxfam's initiatives. In particular, we'll be highlighting the GROW method. Everyone should know these five easy ways you can change the way you shop, cook, and eat to help reduce hunger and poverty.

I hope to see you all at our meeting tonight. But if you can't come, there are plenty of other opportunities to get involved.  We have a table at the Growers Market and are planning for World Food Day, International Women's Day and the Albuquerque Impact Conference.  We also have our next meeting on September 26th at the Flying Star.

NM Oxfam Action Corps at the Grower's Market

Just as the sun was coming up on Saturday, farmers and artists from different communities in New Mexico were polishing the final touches on their produce spreads, gluten free products, and even a Zia shirt stand. The Albuquerque downtown Grower's Market brought foodies and craft enthusiasts to scope out what local artisans were selling. In a culture where some think we're slipping further away from the food system, the farmers market was a community of invested, thoughtful, and hungry neighbors. Discussions about food and justice played a huge role at the New Mexico Oxfam Action Corps table. We also introduced the GROW method: 5 simple principles to help fix the food system. Here are the highlights:

The Grow Method:

1. Save food
2. Eat seasonal
3. Consume less meat
4. Support local farmers
5. Cook smart!

ABQ Downtown Grower's Market: Saturdays 7 a.m. - 12 p.m.
